The final of the Oxford debating competition is behind us now!

After an equal and very interesting semi-final a fortnight ago (8 October), the Senate Room of Opole University was a place where huge emotions took place again. Today took place the final of the competition, which determined the winners of the Oxford debating competition, organized as part of the project "War, captivity and duels on words". The judges decided that the team which presented the most convincing arguments was the Catholic High School from Opole.

An official opening preceded the debate of the teams. This was done by the President of the Association of Friends of the Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War, Dr. Iwona Konopnicka,  and the Museum Director, Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska. The draw that followed decided that the team from the Catholic High School would defend, and the students from the A. Mickiewicz High School in Kluczbork would refute, the thesis: "The duty of Polish soldiers during World War II was to avoid captivity at all costs". It turned out that more skilful speakers, who used more accurate arguments, were those from the defence team. Congratulations!

Among the judges who were to choose winners of this intellectual competition were specialists in various fields: Prof. Danuta Kisielewicz – a historian and political scientist, Dr. Marcin Pietrzak – a philosopher and ethicist, Katarzyna Zawadzka – a journalist of the Radio Opole, and Jacek Ruszar – a representative of the Fundacji Polska Debatuje. The smooth conduct of the debates was supervised by Julia Policht as the speaker.

There are still the Public Award to be given. We will inform you when a decision has been reached.

Let us remind once again that the project "War, captivity and duels on words" is co-financed from the programme "EDUKO - VERY YOUNG CULTURE 2019-2021 - OPOLSKIE". It is implemented by the Association of Friends of the CMJW, and the partners of the undertaking – apart from our Museum – are:  the Public Kindergarten in Łambinowice, Public High School No. III in Opole, Catholic High School SPSK in Opole, A. Mickiewicz High School in Kluczbork, and High School No. I in Namysłów.
