Zygmunt Moryto has died

The New Year has begun sadly. Yesterday, January 1, died Zygmund Moryto (born in 1954), a poet and graphic artist, who developed his unquestionable talent to the level of workshop, recognized by many, artistry at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (diploma with honours in the copperplate studio of Prof. M. Wejman and in the painting studio of Prof. J. Świderski). In 1980 he settled down in Opole where he had stayed and created all his life. He practiced workshop and applied graphic as well as painting and drawing. His presented his works at numerous individual and collective exhibitions at home and abroad. His creativity had gained recognition of culture institutions and individual collectors from, among others, Poland, West Germany, Austria, Finland, the USA, and Australia.

He was associated with our Museum by his interest in the history of Second World War, by the figure of his father, Mieczysław Koryto, a longstanding member of the Museum Council, and by his personal friendship. He stated this by creating a triptych whose central idea was Polish Army soldiers who participated in fighting of 1939 – the only stained-glass window in his artistic output which for years decorated the entrance door to the Museum seat in Opole, a series of graphics dedicated to the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice, as well as, a very reflective painting, prepared especially for the exhibition organized by us in Opole – "Freedom and Captivity" (29.10-25.11. 2014) and bearing a characteristic comment: "Everything is in the head... A person's life story is written with suffering. However, everyone has their own gardens that no one can uproot. Everything is in the head...".

Zygmunt Koryto is a  significant figure in the life of the City and the Museum. We eternized him in our series "Faces of Opole" and the first volume of the CMJW publication Faces of Opole. Faces of the Museum (2014), and the catalogue to the above mentioned exhibition (2014).

Above all, he will stay in the memory of those of us who had the opportunity to know him.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family.
