Visit of Prince Radu Duda
Yesterday, 11 October, a delegation from Romania, led by a representative of that country's royal family, Prince Radu Duda, paid a visit to Łambinowice. The spouse of Princess Marguerite, who holds the honourable title of the Custodian of the Crown of Romania, came, above all, with the intention of visiting our Memorial and paying tribute to the Romanian soldiers–prisoners-of-war who died at Lamsdorf.
Radu Duda's visit to the Old POWs Cemetery in Łambinowice was accompanied by two politicians representing the Parliaments of Romania and Moldova. Its nature and military accent were highlighted by the Prince by donning a complete field uniform of the native army for the occasion. In addition, there was an assisting company of Polish soldiers. On the part of the Museum, the guests were received by the Director, Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, and Dr. Anna Wickiewicz, Head of the Department of Education and Exhibitions, together with the museum workers. The Commune of Łambinowice, meanwhile, was represented by its mayor, Tomasz Karpinski, and the secretary, Jerzy Rosiński.
The Prince was visibly moved by the condition of the cemetery, especially the plots where the Romanian prisoners-of-war are buried. The well-maintained alleys and gravestones protected from the passage of time made a very good impression on our guest. This is yet another testimony to the Romanian side's interest in our Site of Remembrance, especially the Łambinovice war necropolis, where are about 2,400 graves of the Romanians who died there due to illness and the generally poor living conditions in the camp.
In addition to learning about the history of the place and laying flowers at the Monument to the Victims of the First World War, there was also time for off-the-record conversations. Among other things, there were discussed plans to establish systematic educational and scientific cooperation.
