Victims of Katyń Massacre Remembrance Day - commemorative events in Opole

The Opole’s commemorations of the victims of Katyń Massacre were attended by a large number of people whose presence proved that the mass murder of Polish officers is not a matter of the past.

Our Museum was represented by Dr. Piotr Stanek, Head of the Research Department. The event took place on 12 April at the Church of Blessed Czesław, where a monument to the Victims of the Katyń Massacre is located on the square in front of the church. Urszula Gawor, President of the Katyń Family Association in Opole, referred to its existence in her speech - she expressed her satisfaction and pride at the fact that such a special place of remembrance (and place of meetings) had appeared in our city, and emphasised its importance in the current political situation.

Speeches were also made by the Deputy Governor Piotr Pośpiech, the Deputy Mayor of Opole Małgorzata Stelnicka and the Chairman of the City Council Łukasz Sowada. The guard of honour during the ceremony was provided by soldiers from the local military unit, 10th Opole Logistics Brigade, so there was a Roll Call of Remembrance and gun salute, after which the participants laid flowers and lit candles at the monument. Among those who paid tribute to the victims was Maria Matlachowska, daughter of Lieutenant Józef Libura who was murdered in Katyń, and an associate of our Museum.
