Two identity tags got to the Museum

At the beginning of March, the Museum received two prisoner-of-war identity tags belonging to the married couple of Irena (1919-2004, nee Zbojno) and Tadeusz Opolski (1915-1994). They were given to us by their son, Professor Janusz Opolski, a physician, public health specialist, academic teacher, and civil servant.

The donation of the identity tags is the result of a contact made with us by the owner of the "dog tags" who was reconstructing the fate of the family. From his account, confirmed by the queries, it emerges that Irena and Tadeusz Opolski were soldiers in the "Bakcyl" unit (Sanitation of the Warsaw District of the Home Army) – Field Hospital at 27 Wspolna Street. After the Warsaw Uprising they were taken into captivity to a military hospital in Zeithain (Stalag IV B Mühlberg).

Most probably, both tags were issued to the prisoners-of- war in Zeithain. We are currently in the process of formalizing the donation. We also hope that, together with the donor, we will be able to find out more details about the fate of his parents.
