The sculptures from the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War have returned to their original place
The Rewars conservation workshop has completed the difficult and laborious conservation treatment of the sculptures - a characteristic feature of the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War. On 14-15 November, the sculptures returned to their original place.
This was the first conservation of a joint work by Opole-based artists Marian Nowak, Jan Borowczak and Jerzy Beski, from 1965. At last, after almost 60 years, the three metal, geometrised figures depicting, albeit not literally, victims of the Lamsdorf POW camp have been carried out conservation treatment on them.
The monumental memorial dedicated to the Lamsdorf prisoners-of-war from the Second World War, let us reiterate that, was erected in 1964 and complemented with the sculptures a year later. On several occasions, they were damaged and pillaged, especially smaller elements. The damaged hanger rods and bolts, in addition to the passage of time and the nesting of birds in the nooks and crannies of the sculptural structure, had a negative impact on its state of preservation.
The initiator of the conservation work was the Museum, which had a positive opinion on the matter from the Council for Protection of the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice. The task was carried out by the Łambinowice Commune which manages and maintains the site. It was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Opole Voivode. The conservation treatment was carried out by the ‘Rewars’ company.
