Soldiers' "Work for Peace" at the site of remembrance

Starting from 20 August, in Łambinowice, there has been taking place an international project combining voluntary work at the memorial site with learning about Europe's difficult history in the 20th century. The project was initiated by the Museum, but organisationally is greatly supported by Lt. Col. Rainer Grygiel of The German War Graves Commission (VDK) in Kassel and the Polish side: Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and Ministry of Defence (Major Leszek Radzik is responsible for supervision).

This is another consecutive year of the undertaking, and again, with the participation of the 10th Opole Logistics Brigade, who is joined by soldiers from the 161st Logistics Battalion in Delmenhorst. This is therefore a time-tested formula: volunteers in uniform first get to know the post-camp areas and the war necropolises and then carry out a number of clean-up works. This year's planned tasks include: clearing drainage ditches along the internal roads, chemical spraying of the surface of the preserved walls of the huts ruins, mending the roof of the watch tower and treat it with resin to make it waterproof, mowing and cleaning the areas around the remains of the huts, and clearing the interior of the huts’ segments of vegetation and emerging humus.

The clean-up works will last until 30 August and will culminate in a Remembrance Day, the official part of which will be carried out, as in previous years, on the last day.
