Research at the Prague archive

To the archives of the Museum are currently transferred the results of our three-day research work (7–9 September) at the Military Historical Archive in Prague (Historýcký Vojenský Archiv).

The team conducting the work in the capital of the Chech Republic consisted of: Dr. Piotr Stanek, (Research Department), Monika Sobczak (Department of Education and Exhibitions), Dominik Marcinkowski (Section of Communication and Public Image). Their work consisted in searching and making digital records of documents produced by the administration of the stalags in Lamsdorf and subordinate to it camp in Teschen.

The camp archives found their way to Prague by chance. When the end of the Second World War was approaching, on the order of the last commandant of the Teschen camp, Oberst Albert Thielebein, the records, including some parts of the archive transferred after 1943 from Stalag VIII B Lamsdorf, were sent by the Wehrmacht to the heartland of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. However, under unknown circumstances, most likely during the evacuation transport, the documentation was abandoned and eventually ended up in the hands of Czech archivists.

This year's archive research is another one carried out by the workers of the Museum in the Military Historical Archive. We are glad that after a long break caused by the pandemic, still taking into account the epidemic restrictions, we can resume our works in archives, which are essential in our research activity.
