Report on the Discovery Saturday

The second season of archaeological works at the Site Of National Remembrance in Łambinowice has been opened. The first dig was demonstrated during the Discovery Saturday – as a workshop for both children and adults, on 24 June, at the site of former Stalag 318/VIII F (344) Lamsdorf. The event was part of the project 'Science for Society. Society for Science at the Site of National in Łambinowice'.

The activities were similar in concept to last year's workshop, which took place in the vicinity of the Museum in Łambinowice. This time we met in the depth of the memorial site, precisely at the Place with a Scar opened-air exhibition. The bad weather did not discourage archaeology enthusiasts; there were also members of the "Triselion" and "Piast" metal detecting societies, and representatives of the local community, including families with children, present.

At the start, taking cover of the education room, the participants watched films documenting the Museum’s activities in the scope of searching and conserving precious artefacts of the POW history of Łambinowice. It was accompanied by a commentary by Elżbieta Góra, head of the Department of Conservation and Collections. On behalf of the Museum Director, she also expressed her thanks to Radosław Wyrzucki of the "Triselion" group – who has financed the conservation of one of the crosses in the Old POW Cemetery.

Another item in the Discovery Saturday’s programme was a workshop aimed at the youngest. Together with Professor Michał Pawleta and Dr. Anna Czerner, the children created drawing histories of randomly selected artefacts. Adults, meanwhile, in the company of Dr. Anna Wickiewicz, head of the Department of Education and Exhibitions, visited the open-air exhibition "Place with a Scar".

The main part of Saturday's activities took place at the camp relics - the hydrophore and fire tank. A showcase dig was done there and surface excavations using detectors were carried out. Parallel to the physical work, educational work took place, mainly carried out by the archaeologists and members of the detecting groups.

We encourage you to follow our announcements and reports on the next events of the "Holidays with Archaeology. Season 2", and to participate in them!
