November edition of the ,,Łambinowice Museum Meetings”

On the eternal watch. 150 years of the Old Prisoners-of-War  Cemetery in Łambinowice is the title of yesterday's very interesting "Łambinowice Museum Meetings", which took place in the autumn scenery of the oldest part, from 1871, of the Old POW Cemetery in Łambinowice.

A quite large group of people interested in the origins of the war necropolis gathered in the cemetery section XV, sector C, around the monument dedicated to the victims of the first Lamsdorf prisoner-of-war camp – the French soldiers from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. The attendants were welcomed by the Museum Director, Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, and the latest research findings concerning this distant period were presented by Dr. Piotr Stanek, Head of the Research Department of the Museum. In the context of the war, and especially of the history of the camp and soldiers interned in Lamsdorf 150 years ago, was presented, by him, the history of the small plot, currently containing 52 graves, as well the history of the monument in its centre.

A very interesting thread of the story by Dr. P. Stanek was the exceptional figure of Father Józef Hołubowicz (1835-1887), a Jesuit priest, whose rich life story included pastoral care for the French prisoners-of-war. The historian devoted a text of his to this chapter of the priest’s life, in the sixth volume of Sketches from the History of Lamsdorf/Łambinowice Camps. History and the Present Day, and next Sunday, November 7, at 3 p.m., in the church in Łambinowice, he will  deliver a lecture on this topic.

Another important part of the meeting at the cemetery was information from the Museum Director and Katarzyna Byra of the Łambinowice Office about conservation and restoration works on the POW graves. This was also an opportunity to say thanks to Adela and Janusz Brasielski, who were the first representatives of the Łambinowice Community to respond to the Museum's appeal, and financed the conservation of one of the grave crosses.

At the end of the meeting, the people said together the prayer introduced by the parish priest of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Łambinowice, Father Adam Ciosmak.
