National Day of Mourning in Germany

National Day of Mourning in Germany, on 13 November, cultivates the memory of perished soldiers and civilians who were the victims of the world wars, violence and Nazi prosecution. This year's commemoration is organised in Berlin by Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V. (German War Graves Commission), and our Museum is represented by the head of Department of Collection and Conservation, Elżbieta Góra.

The programme of the commemoration (11-13 November 2022) included a visit to memorial sites of the capital, including the former Plötzensee prison where in 1933-1945 were executed more than 2,500 inmates, and the war cemetery at Lilienthalstrasse. The most important event was a special plenary session of the German Bundestag during which the presidents of Germany (Frank-Walter Steinmeier) and Latvia (Egils Levits) spoke.

The invitation given to our institution is the result of the Museum's cooperation with Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V.
