National and ethnic minorities: conference in Opole

The event entitled "(Auto)presentations. Culture and memory of minorities in exhibition projects" is organised by: German Minority Research Centre, the E. Smołka Voivodeship Public Library in Opole, Documentation and Exhibition Centre for Germans in Poland, the Sorbian Institute and the Sorbian Museum in Bautzen. The event is supported by the Polish-German Foundation for Science, and it enjoys the honorary patronage of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Poland, the Marshal of the Opole Voivodeship Andrzej Buła, the Federal Union of European Nationalities and the Working Group of German Minorities.

The museum is represented at the conference by its deputy director Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła, who follows a panel discussion on the role of archives and museums in the protection of the cultural heritage of minorities, and attends to lectures devoted, among other things, on the ethnic identity of such communities as the Kashubians, Lemkos, Sorbs and Carpathian Germans, as well as on the activities of museums from across the western border, including the Sorbian Museum in Bautzen, the Museum of North Schleswig, and the Museum of North Frisians in Bredstedt.

Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła has already had the opportunity to attend the opening of the Western and Northern Territories Heritage exhibition and take part in a debate on the background of the presented exhibition and issues. The debated was hosted by Professor Mariusz Patelski at Opole Town Hall. Both events took place on 21 October.
