Methodology workshops on accessibility at the Memorial Museum Ravensbrück

In the last week, from 4 to 7 December, representatives of the Museum participated in a series of workshops on reinforcing competencies of museum workers in their capacity to attend people with disabilities. Logistical support for the workshops was provided by employees of the Mahn-und Gedenkstätte Ravensbrück. The event brought together representatives of Polish and German museum institutions.

The workshop were part of the ongoing educational project "Inclusive memory", initiated by German partners in cooperation with the Stutthof Museum in Stutthof. The essence of the idea was to develop solutions that would enable people at risk of exclusion, due to various types and degrees of disability, to join the audiences of museums-sites of remembrance on an equal footing. Therefore, representatives of these groups took part in the meetings. During a tour of the Ravensbrück Nazi concentration camp memorial site, they reviewed solutions addressed to people with different needs and abilities.

The workshop sessions focused on four issues: the operation of visitor information centres, offers for the blind and visually impaired, films with information in sign language and easy-to-understand and read texts. In addition, the workshops provided a good opportunity to develop sensitivity and understanding towards those who - for various reasons - find it difficult to use the offer of memorial sites.

The sessions were attended by our Museum workers: Dr. Michał Jakubik from the Department of Education and Exhibitions and Dominik Marcinkowski from the Section of Communication and Public Image, the access coordinator.
