Lublin, Warsaw, Gdańsk – we discuss and educate ourselves

A time of our increased activity in nationwide museum forums happened at the turn of January and February. The forums’ themes revolved around forms of commemoration and education in the context of the most tragic events of the Second World War, as well as care of the Museum’s collection.

The former issue was focused on during the event of 29th of February 2024, prepared by the National Museum in Lublin to mark the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the German prison and the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the communist prison based in the Lublin castle. The organisers intended to, among other things, unveil an installation (designed by Robert Kuśmirowski) using a 19th-century gate of the former prison, and panel discussions with the motto "Memory in Art". The Museum Director, Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, took part in one of them.

At the same time (29 February - 1 March), at The Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, Dr. Anna Wickiewicz, who heads the Department of Education and Exhibitions, together with Urszula Lechicka, participated in a seminar for educators from memorial sites and museums of martyrdom. The extensive programme of the meeting made it possible, among other things, to visit exhibitions, the Jewish Historical Institute Archives, listen to a lecture with many inspirations for educators, and take part in a showcase of the historical walk "Following in the footsteps of the women of Oneg Shabbat".

The head of the Department of Collections and Conservation, Elżbieta Góra, was in Gdańsk to take part in a training course on "Acquisition, record-keeping, control inventory, deaccessioning", organised by the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk in association with the Polish Association of Museum Inventors (on 1 March). The training programme covered issues related to the care of museum collections, taking into account the multifaceted nature of the tasks carried out by museums in this regard.
