Legacy of a 'war mother' in the Museum collection

Owing to the latest donation by Mariusz Jędrzejowski, the Museum collection has been enriched with an interesting testimony of selfless help and empathy towards Polish soldiers kept in prisoner-of-war camps – they are memorabilia from the Second World War saved by one of 'war mothers', privately she was the donor's mother, Anna Hoffmann.

The donated collection consists of, among other things, Anna Hoffmann's correspondence from 1941-1942 with prisoners-of-war held in Oflag VII A Murnau and Stalag VI G Bonn-Duisdorf, photographs documenting the activities of the camp theatre at Murnau, immortalising such plays as "The Merchant of Venice", "The Chocolate Soldier" or "Where the Devil Cannot Go", as well as a photograph of the altar in the camp chapel of Oflag Murnau as well as group photographs of prisoners-of-war from both camps. Particularly interesting is also the portrait of Anna Hoffmann, which one of the POWs sent to her benefactor. We know the date of its creation - 12 June 1944, but the illegible signature makes it impossible to identify the author.

Thank you very much for this valuable gift!
