Invitation to a lesson by the Museum on the Katyń Massacre
The 85th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre provided the occasion to commemorate the Year of the Polish Heroes from Kharkiv, Mednoye and Bykivnia, as declared by the Senate of Poland, in a special way. Museum’s educational activities, which we conduct online for pupils of the final Key Stages in primary and secondary schools, fit in well with this idea.
The activities last as long as a standard school lesson and during them the museum educator, with the help of an interesting presentation, explains not only the causes and circumstances of the war crime committed by the NKVD in 1940 against Polish prisoners-of-war and detainees, but also discusses the political context of Katyń and the remembrance of it. This is especially important for today's young people born a few decades after the 1989 breakthrough and therefore having only an inherited and generally rather vague knowledge of the realities of everyday life under communism. It is a history lesson that teaches about the tragedy of war and totalitarianism and the power of remembrance.
