International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day has been already commemorated for the sixteenth time. The date – January 27 – is associated with the anniversary of liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. Therefore, today we mark the 76th anniversary of the liberation of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. Due to the pandemic, commemorations around the world have been organized in a symbolic form, with very limited number of participants, or online.

In our place of remembrance, in front of the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of- War commemorating the victims of Nazi crimes during World War II, a modest ceremony was also held. Representatives of the 171st Light Infantry Battalion in Brzeg from the 13th Silesian Brigade of Territorial Defence, laid flowers and lit candles. The Museum was represented by Dr Anna Wickiewicz, head of the Education and Exhibitions Department.

The main commemorations in Warsaw and Oświęcim are held online as well. The transmission of the anniversary commemorations will begin today at 4.00 p.m. at www.auschwitz.org. The leitmotiv for it will be the fate of the children in Auschwitz – the youngest victims of the camp, whose number is estimated at over 200 thousand.
