Impressive collection of memorabilia went to the Museum

Work is continuing on a very valuable collection, by which our Museum’s set was enriched at the end of the year. It is about almost 300 objects – memorabilia of Ensign Mieczysław Kułakowski (1915-1978) and his wife, Natalia Kułakowska (1919-2017). In the donated collection, special attention is placed on sketches and watercolours by Major Rudolf Fryszowski, as well as richly illustrated with sketches, watercolours, cut outs from newspapers or stickers from food items, a wartime diary of Mieczysław Kułakowski (from 1939-1941). In addition, the collection contains numerous copies of POW correspondence (letter sheets, postcards), photos taken in Wehrmacht POW camps, badges and patches of Polish military units, and documents as well as personal items which belonged to the spouses.

Mieczysław Kułakowski was a prisoner-of-war of Oglag VII A Murnau, stalags: VIB Neu Versen, and VI G Bonn-Duisdorf. After his escape from captivity he got to Switzerland where he was involved in Polish orientated activity and aid for POWs. After the war, he got married and emigrated to Australia.

The objects got to the Museum thanks to Professor Jerzy Łazarkiewicz from Warsaw whose father, Second Lieutenant Jan Łazarkiewicz (1900-1981), soldier of the 17th Greater Poland Uhlan Regiment and prisoner of war in Oflag VII A Murnau, was a friend of Mieczysław Kułakowski, and also thanks to the help of Natalia Rokita from Austrialia (Natalia Kułakowska's niece).

Thank you very much for the donation and the trust placed in us!
