Heroes' Day in Romania

On 25 May, the Romanian people mark national Heroes' Day. On this occasion, at the Old Prisoners-Of-War Cemetery in Łambinowice was held a remembrance ceremony dedicated to the Romanian soldiers kept on the Lamsdrof POW camp during the First World War.

The event was attended by, among others: diplomats in the persons of Col. Alina Done - Defence Attaché at the Romanian Embassy in Poland and Maj. Cristian-Emanuel Barbulescu,  Monika Kwiatosz, Honorary Consul of Italy, Capt. Ewa Miksza from the 10th Logistic Brigade in Komprachcice, Tomasz Karpiński, Mayor of the Łambinowice Community, and Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, Director of the CMJW. The guests were accompanied by a group of Polish soldiers and Museum workers.

In his speech, the Defence Attaché explained that the tradition of celebrating Heroes' Day was introduced in Romania in 1920 as a sign of gratitude to the heroes who died in the First World War, later interrupted by the time of the Second World War and Communism, and renewed in 1995. In 2003. Heroes' Day was declared a national holiday. It is important for the Romanian people to be able to lay flowers on the graves of their soldiers at this special time. The Old POW Cemetery in Łambinowice being the largest war necropolis in Europe outside their country, where they were buried during the First World War.

The final part of the ceremony consisting of laying flowers, lightning candles and a visit to the Museum.
