German and Polish soldiers will clean up the site of remembrance

From 4 to 15 July, a clean-up of the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice will be conducted by soldiers of the Bundeswehr and the Polish Army as well as wards of the Youth Education Centre in Nysa.

The most essential part of the work will be the removal of self-seeded trees from a part of the so-called szaberplac of Stalag 318/VIII F (344) Lamsdorf, where archaeological works will soon be conducted. There are also planned preservation works on the remains of the camp infrastructure and its reconstructed elements, and clean-up works of the Old Prisoners-of-War Cemetery, and possibly of the area around the Museum building.

The initiative of this joined effort of soldiers from the Bundeswehr and the 10th Opole Logistics Brigade at the Łambinowice memorial is nothing new. Similar undertakings have already taken place three times, in: 2016, 2017 and 2019, when the soldiers were joined by wards from the Youth Education Centre in Nysa.

In the undertaking are involved: Colonel (Retired) Joachim Franke, Joanna Franke – Polish office of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.); Colonel (Retired) Rainer Grygiel – Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V, for cooperation with the Bundeswehr; Major Leszek Radzik – 10th Opole Logistics Brigade; Magdalena Erdman – Ministry of Culture and National Heritage; Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska (Director), Elżbieta Góra (Head of the Department of Collections and Conservation), Tadeusz Piwowarczyk (Technical Officer) – Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War.

We encourage you to follow our website – there we will report on the progress.
