From a POW’s story

The ongoing pandemic forces us to stay indoors but also calls out attention to an interesting use of our time. After the invitation to watching a presentation by Piotr Stanek about  sporting activities in captivity, we go back again to POW stories and the Museum collections about them.

Beside reading, the above mentioned sports, education, theatre, music and art activities, the prisoners also engaged in social games and hobbies. They collected stamps, organized chess tournaments, played cards. Boards and game pieces were made of materials available in the camps, which we present at the Museum exhibition.

A British private, Arthur Weston, prisoner-of-war of Stalag VIII B Lamsdorf, was well-known of his numerous activities in the camp, among them was also photography. On base of the photos taken by him, we have in our collection, is possible to show the everyday life in isolation as well spare time of prisoners. One of the pictures depicts a chess match. The man on right is the author of the photo.
