Education around "They were neighbours...." exhibition

On 20 April, one day after the opening of the portable exhibition "They were neighbours: human choices and behaviour in the face of the Holocaust", were held first educational activities connected with it. The Museum's efforts in this regard were supported by the Oświęcim Human Rights Institute, the Municipal Public Library in Opole and four Opole secondary schools.

The event was attended by young people from Public Secondary Schools No. I, II and III and the Catholic Secondary School of the Association of Friends of Catholic Schools, as well as adults, because - what is very importantly for us - one of the school groups was joined by several participants with hearing impairments who, thanks to the work of an interpreter from the Opole Branch of the Polish Association of the Deaf, were able to benefit from the educational programme without any hindrance.

Each group had four meetings with: Dr. Alicja Bartuś, who, at our Museum seat at Minorytów Street 3, shared her reflections on the phenomenon of social memory and tried to sensitise young people to the origins of extreme violence and how not to be indifferent to its presages: stereotypes, ostracism, hatred and discrimination; Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła, Deputy Director of the CMJW, showed on the example of the fate of one of the officers, Leon Szyfman, how different the situation of Jewish civilians during the occupation was from that of Jewish soldiers imprisoned in oflags; Aleksandra Bielska, conducted a workshop entitled "They were neighbours" in the next door library, and finally, Anna Shaft gave a guided tour of the exhibition in John Paul II Square - where participants were not only expected to be listeners, but also were engaged on practical tasks related to the content of the exhibition.

We would like to thank all the above-mentioned persons and the teachers for their help in making the organisation go smoothly; The next workshop is on 11 May. You are welcome to attend it!
