Dr. Piotr Stanek gives a lecture in Brenna
During the Second World War, in Brenna, a small village in the Silesian Beskids, a pacification took place. Its tragic circumstances closely tied the fate of the local highlanders to the Italian prisoners-of-war who stayed then in the area. Today, 13 February, marks the 80th anniversary of those events.
To mark the occasion, a ceremony commemorating the victims of the pacification will be held on 15 February at the Beskid Zielin ‘Przytulia’ House. Incidentally, the tragic events took place right in front of the ‘Przytulia’ building - today an obelisk stands there. The programme of the ceremony includes an artistic and memorial part, during which Wojciech Grajewski - a historian, who has been researching the history of Brenna for 15 years, and Dr. Piotr Stanek, representing our Museum, will speak. It is worth noting that we know more and more about Italian POWs, thanks to, among other things, the historical research and archaeological excavations which have been conducted at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice and the discovery of a plot of 60 Italians who died in Lamsdorf.
