Discovering the family history of Jerzy Okrzesa. Report on Łambinowice Museum Meeting

At the first Łambinowice Museum Meeting organised after the summer holidays, the event's guest, Jerzy Okrzesa, took his audience on an extraordinary journey, talking about his research into the history of his uncle Michał and discovering and documenting his family history step by step.

The talk on Uncle Michael's American Dream. How to Start Your Family History Search? was given yesterday (4 September) at 5 p.m., at the Museum's Łambinowice seat, perfectly fitting in the European Heritage Days’ theme of "Routes, Networks and Connections".

Jerzy Okrzesa told the large audience about the journey he had made through his family collections, mainly correspondence, from Niemodlin via Podolia to North America. All this was done to discover the incredible story of his uncle, Michał. During the meeting, the guest also shared the challenges, difficulties and biggest surprises of this journey, as well as the results of his queries, including those concerning a subject closely related to our Museum - specifically, the places of internment in Canada during the First World War. There was also time for the presentation of the result of Jerzy Okrzesa’s long researches and queries  - a book entitled Stryj Michał. Sto lat w listach. Domaradzcy [Uncle Michael. One Hundred Years in Letters. The Domaradzki Family], which was highly appreciated by the audience. The event was accompanied by a discussion on archival sources and the possibilities offer by genealogical research. It was moderated by Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła, deputy director of the Museum, and Urszula Lechicka from the Department of Education and Exhibitions.

We are delighted that the meeting attracted such a huge audience.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to other our museum meetings during which we will be talking about history.
