Conservation of gravestones

In mid-August, another stage of work on the tangible heritage of the Old Prisoners-Of-War Cemetery in Łambinowice was completed.

In 2023, financial support to the Commune of Łambinowice, that is the burial authority responsible for the cemetery, was provided by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Governor of the Opole Voivodeship, what has facilitated the preservation of another 400 crosses on the graves of World War I prisoners-of-war by protecting them from progressive destruction. The conservation work concerned the parts of the necropolis in section A and included 130 crosses from plot I and 270 crosses from plots II, III and IV – it was here, where conservation research was additionally carried out. The contractor responsible for the entire task was ZAJMART Mariusz Zając conservation workshop.

Let us remind you that conservation works at the Old POW Cemetery in Łambinowice have been carried out since 2014. They started then with the restoration of the Serbian POWs Monument. Almost every subsequent year, about 400 grave crosses are subjected to conservation treatments owing to the funds receive from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage’s Graves and War Cemeteries programme. Additionally, our Museum effectively supports the Commune of Łambinowice in looking for other sources of funding for conservation. In this way, Romanian state conducted a full conservation of 2,400 Romanian soldiers' graves in 2020. The social action "Give me a Memory" is also ongoing. This is because there are still more than 1,000 crosses awaiting conservation.

From the Museum part, this year’s conservation work was supervised by Elżbieta Góra, head of the Department of Collections and Conservation.
