Conference at the European Centre for Memory, Education, Culture

On Friday, 24 September, was held a conference ,,European narratives of the Second World War – POW camps as sites of national remembrance in view of current controversial interpretations of World War II”, organized by the Memory, Education, Culture Foundation in collaboration with the Meetingpoint Music Messiaen association. Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, director of the CMJW, attended the event.

The conference began with the laying of wreaths in front of the monument to the Victims of Stalag VIII A Görlitz and a lecture delivered by Kinga Hartmann-Wóycicka (President of the Memory, Education, Culture Foundation) entitled "Memory and Responsibility". Another important part of the event was a panel discussion entitled "POW camps of World War II and European memory of them", in which participated Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, who represented  the Museum. The substantive part of the conference was complemented by interesting presentations on archaeological works on the site of the former Stalag VIII A Görlitz by Dr. Cezary Buśko, and the Cemetery of the Soviet Soldiers in Zgorzelec by Dr. Eugeniusz Bilonozhko. 

In the course of the meeting, the Consul General of Germany in Wrocław, Hans Jörg Neumann, appreciated Kinga Hartmann-Wóycicka's efforts to preserve the memory of Stalag VIII A Görlitz by presenting her with an appreciation certificate together with the award of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Warsaw, while the Belgian chamber music ensemble Het Collectief, which came to Zgorzelec on the initiative of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Poland, Luc Jacobs, performed two pieces: Stalag VIII A from 1947 by Tristan Murail and Quartet for the end of time, composed in the stalag by Olivier Messiaen.
