Completion of works on the site of the former Russenlager
At the end of the year, on December 21, took place the acceptance of construction and restoration works of the huts, which make the best preserved remains of Stalag 318/VIII F (344) Lamsdorf – the so-called Russenlager. The ALTA sp. z o.o. company from Wrocław, carried out the works, from 15 June to 18 December 2020.
The range of works was very extensive. In the course of them, the remains of the huts were cleaned out of vegetation, debris and soil. The surface of the walls and cement floors were strengthened and secured. Based on examination, an effective method of systematically draining rainwater from the ruins and the areas where the huts are located, was developed and implemented. An especially extensive construction works covered the partially reconstructed second segment of the hut no 3. The area around the remains of the camp was also cleaned up. This is the first time such thorough work has been done here.
The exertions, which were conducted for a half of the year, went together with findings which might be helpful in revealing the history of the place and the people detained there in the years of Second World War. For example, the cleaning of the huts’ walls significantly extended the surface after multi-story bunks, and reconstruction of technology of constructions works, confirmed the thesis that putting up the huts took place at different times, and that they were repaired.
The construction and conservation works cost was 2,626,800.00 PLN (European Union: 2,232,780.00; Minister of Culture and National Heritage: 391,770.00; Self-Government of the Opole Voivodeship: 2,250.00) and they were carried out within the framework of the project "Conservation works and educational exhibition on the grounds of the former prisoner-of-war camp Stalag 318/VIII F (344) Lamsdorf (Łambinowice), together with modernization of the building and surroundings of the Central Museum of Prisoners-of-War in Opole and purchase of necessary equipment within the framework of the ROP WO for the years 2014-2020".
