Completion of works on graves of Romanian prisoners-of-war

At the end of last week (17–18 December), at the Old POW Cemetery in Łambinowice, the final acceptance of restoration works on 2377 graves of the Romanian prisoners-of-war from World War I, took place. The restoration works were conducted by the ZAJMAR Mariusz Zając Pracownia Konserwacji Dzieł Sztuku company, under the agreement signed in June 2020 with the Romania Ministry of National  Defence. The cost of the largest conservation project that the Museum has so far initiated at the memorial site, in cooperation with the Łambinowice Community, was over 145,000 €.

On account of the completion of the works, the Museum was visited by a Romanian delegation – representatives of the Romanian Office for Remembrance of Heroes (ONCE), Mioara Balosin, and Deputy Defence, Military, Air and Naval Attaché to Republic of Poland, Major Liviu Pititcari. They expressed their thanks to the director, Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, for the help given by the Museum to the Romanian side in performance of the works.

The visit of the foreign guests was also an opportunity to discuss the organization of the ceremony at the Old POW Cemetery in Łambinowice with the participation of representatives of the Romanian government, postponed, due to the pandemic, to next year. Its date and course will depend on the epidemic situation.  Further details of the event will be determined during a visit by the Romanian Ambassador to Poland, in January 2021.
