Christmas themed museum classes

God is born, power is trembling...” Christmas in prisoners-of-war camps is the theme of free-of-charge museum classes dedicated to primary school pupils and secondary school and technical school students.

During the 45-minute classes, our educators will talk about how Christmas was celebrated by soldiers held captive by the Wehrmacht and NKVD during World War II. Participants of the classes will learn, among other things, that prisoners-of-war often began preparing for the festive season as early as late November. They wrote cards and letters decorated with hand-made drawings, prepared simple decorations and frugal food – this was supposed to give a festive atmosphere to their gloom camp reality. Finally, this most important evening came around and Christmas carols were sung and the Christmas wafer (Polish: opłatek) was broken. Was this always possible? Did the festive mood spread to everyone – the prisoners, and perhaps also the guards? How was the New Year welcomed? These and other questions will be answered during the classes.

The classes can be conducted online (via the MS Teams application) or in-person  (at the both Museum seats: in Opole and Łambinowice, combined with paid visits to exhibitions).

Please note that during the classes conducted in the Museum there are limits on the number of participants due to the epidemic situation.
