‘Archaeology of Memory’. A film about the latest archaeological works in Łambinowice
We would like to invite you to watch our new video, which is a concise report on the archaeological works conducted at the Old POWs Cemetery in Łambinowice. The works have been carried out as part of the interdisciplinary research project ‘Archaeology of Memory’.
‘Archaeology of Memory’ is a continuation of the interdisciplinary research project we completed in June this year, ’Science for Society. Society for Science at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice'. The team of researchers, which - apart from some of us - is made up of archaeologists, physical anthropologists and forensic medics, led by Dr. Dawid Kobiałka, is about to complete an important stage in the research work of the Museum. The research begun in the second half of the 1990s, which gave grounds to believe - contrary to what is visible by us - that there may still be World War II graves in the cemetery, has been verified by fieldwork. At first we managed to uncover the graves of 60 Italian soldiers - POWs of Stalag 344 Lamsdorf - but also, what is equally important, to establish their identity. Now, following administrative procedures, and in accordance with the wish of the Italian side, the remains of the interned Italians are either returned to their homeland or transferred to the Italian War Cemetery in Bielany, Warsaw.
The film we would like to show you is a presentation of this year's September archaeological works. It is not only a pictorial record of them, but also a tribute to those who left their personal stories in Łambinowice.
The project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
