Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was a special event in the history of the Second World War, which is why on 19 April each year is celebrated the memory of this greatest act of military action taken by the Jews as an act of defence – not so much their life, but the right to die on their own terms.

The significance of this event makes that to the anniversary commemorations in Warsaw are joined by other cities, including Opole. This year, as part of the commemorations, are being  organised several events: the 2023 Daffodils Campaign, in cooperation with the Municipal Public Library, a popular conference 'Don't be indifferent' at the M. Skłodowska-Curie Secondary School No. 3 in Opole, and a laying of flowers at the site of the former synagogue, burnt down during Kristallnacht ( Night of Broken Glass), at the obelisk commemorating this fact.

The programme of the commemorations includes the opening of the exhibition "They were neighbours: human choices and behaviour in the face of the Holocaust", prepared and presented by the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, at 12.45 p.m. in John Paul II Square. The event is organised, alongside our Museum, by the Opole City Office and the Municipal Public Library in Opole, where the commemorations will be ended with a meeting with Remigiusz Grzela, author of the book, Three Lives of Irena Gelblum.
