Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

79 years ago, on 19 April 1943, fighters of the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) and the Jewish Military Union (ŻZW) started a struggle with the German invaders in the Warsaw Ghetto. The symbolic end of the uprising (its suppression) is considered to be the demolition of the Great Synagogue on 16 May 1943.

One of the events organised as part of the commemoration is the opening of the Warsaw part of the outside exhibition entitled 'They were neighbour: human choices and behaviour in the face of the Holocaust', prepared by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The exhibition is organised by the History Meeting House. The exhibition examines some key questions surrounding the Holocaust. Dr. Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska, director of the Museum, participated in the event, which took place on the Fr Jan Twardowski Square.

The customary form of remembrance of the outbreak of the uprising is Daffodils Social-Educational Campaign organised by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and, in 2022, is has been the 10th anniversary of it. This venture is a reminder of the heroic uprising and the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto what almost put an end to the existence of the community of Warsaw Jews. Its symbol has become the yellow daffodil flower. Our Museum regularly participates in and promotes in the campaign. The programme of this year's campaign can be found HERE.
