Anniversary of the USRR invasion of Poland

It was precisely 82 years ago, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics invaded Poland. On the anniversary of this historical event, 17 September, the Day of Sybirak is commemorated. To mark this anniversary and its tragic consequences, in the whole country, commemorative venues are held.

In Opole, commemorations are organized by the Opole Voivode, Sławomir Kłosowski, and his partners. They will begin with a mass in the Opole Cathedral, followed by a gathering of representatives of veterans' circles, government and local authorities and guests at 5 p.m. on the square in front of the city hall where flowers will be laid and candles lit at the commemorative plaque of the Sybirak Association. Our Museum will be represented at the ceremony by Dr. Piotr Stanek, head of the Scientific Department.

An important event that emphasizes today’s anniversary is making available to the public, the buildings of the Sybir Memorial Museum (MPS) in Białystok. The information about commence of the key stage of construction of the MPS was reported by us back in March 2019. We are delighted that the construction works have been completed, and their effects can now be admired by visitors. The museum is a three-storey complex made up of a new building and one of the pre-war warehouse located in the proximity of the Factory Station (Dworzec Fabryczny), from where, in 1940-1941, tens of thousands of people were deported to Siberia. The main exhibition area is located in the former warehouse, while the educational and administrative areas are located in the new building.

You are welcome to visit this place. More information about the MPS can be found at https://sybir.bialystok.pl/
