Anniversary of foundation of the Home Army

Eighty-one years ago, on 14 February 1942, by order of General Władysław Sikorski, the Union of Armed Struggle was transformed into the Home Army. At the celebrations organised in Opole by the Governor Sławomir Kłosowski our Museum was represented by the head of the Research Department, Dr. Piotr Stanek.

The anniversary commemoration commenced with a Holy Mass in the Church of the Transfiguration following a ceremony in front of the Monument to Home Army Soldiers at which flowers were laid and candles lit. The event was accompanied by commemorative speeches, a roll call of remembrance and singing of the Representative Song of the Polish Army.

The Home Army was the largest underground army during World War II. The fate of many of its soldiers (almost 6 thousand) is connected with Stalag 344 Lamsdorf. This is reminded, among others, by the Monument to the Warsaw Insurgents – POWs of Stalag 344 Lamsdorf, in front of which, each year in October, the Museum organises ceremonies commemorating subsequent anniversaries of the arrival of the first transport of the Warsaw insurgents to Lamsdorf.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that until the end of February, a temporary exhibition Z głową bez karabinu – powojenne dokonania żołnierzy AK [With their head around and no gun – post-war achievements of soldiers of the Home Army], prepared by General Emil Fieldorf "Nil" Home Army Museum in Kraków, is still on display in our Opole seat. The exhibition provides visitors with the opportunity to learn about the profiles of prominent Home Army soldiers, including constructors, inventors, artists, sportsmen and people involved socially and politically.

You are very welcome to see the exhibition!
