About the Monument during the ‘Łambinowice Museum Meeting’

The next, last before the summer season, ‘Łambinowice Museum Meeting’ will take place on 4 June this year. This time it will focus our attention on the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War - an iconic object in the landscape of the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice. This year marks the 60th anniversary of its erection, which is exactly the same time as the establishment of our Museum.

During the meeting we will be listening to Jadwiga Wójciak, president of the ‘Niemodlin Forest Partnership’ Association. Thanks to her inquisitive research, she has come across the people involved in the construction of the Monument. The findings are presented in the text entitled ‘Przestrzeń pamięci, pamięć przestrzeni. Rzecz o budowie Monument Martyrologii Jeńców Wojennych [Sphere of Memory, Memory of Sphere. The Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War]’, published in “Krajobrazy” paper, issued by the Partnership (edited by D. Podobiński).

Let us remind you that the current commemoration of the soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition who died in the Lamsdorf POW camps dates back to the 1960s, an important period in collective memory when new museums were established on the sites of former concentration and extermination camps and prisoner-of-war camps, including our Museum. During that period, new great monuments were also erected at memorial sites, such as the monument at Treblinka (1964), the Monument to the Martyrdom of Prisoners-of-War at Łambinowice (1965) or the International Monument to the Victims of Fascism on the site of Birkenau Concentration Camp (Auschwitz II, 1967).

You are cordially invited to attend the meeting! We look forward to seeing you, as usual, at the Łambinowice seat of the Museum, on the first Wednesday of the month, i.e. on 4 June, at 5.00 p.m.
