About archaeology at the upcoming Łambinowice Museum Meeting

The coming to an end 'Science for Society, Society for Science at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice' project provides a good opportunity to meet in a wider group to find out about the results of this very interesting undertaking.

Over the last two years, intensive works have been conducted at the Łambinowice’s memorial site on the so-called mapping of the areas of the former camps and war cemeteries. This term covers interdisciplinary research carried out using such methods as the analysis of existing documents (including maps and plans, archival and contemporary aerial photographs), the use of airborne laser scanning derivatives, a terrain survey using ground-penetrating radar and metal detectors, as well as the uses of photogrammetry.

This made it possible to identify a great deal of relics of the camp's (and partially the military training ground's) past: prisoner-of-war huts, latrines, storehouses, communication routes, anti-aircraft trenches or dump pits. A total of four probing ditches were dug, and this, combined with searches using metal detectors, helped to unearthed more than 600 objects of the camp provenance - from soldiers' buttons, POW identity tags, and numerous items of everyday use, to elements of the infrastructure. The find of the graves of Italian prisoners-of-war in the Old POW Cemetery and the identification of the remains of two soldiers from this lot should be regarded as the greatest discovery.

During the meeting we will present the project’s concluding exhibition, with some of these finds on display. The exhibition entitled Lamsdorf/Łambinowice. Archaeology at the Site of Remembrance will be accompanied by the screening of a film by Daniel Frymark by the same title. Your guide through the fascinating world of archaeological research will be, among others, Dr. Kamil Karski, a member of the project’s team, professionally connected with the KL Plaszow Museum in Kraków.

We have prepared something else - it is worth checking it out in person when visiting the Museum in Łambinowice on 8 May at 5 p.m. You are cordially invited!
