A Łambinowice Museum Meeting – report

The theme of love in captivity concluded this year's series of 'Łambinowice Museum Meetings'. It was prompted by the work on a temporary exhibition, currently being prepared in the Museum's Research Department, dedicated to this very subject. As it turns out, the subject it is not at all trivial and but rather quite complex, because it can carry a multiplicity of aspects as well as the delicacy of the very matter of feelings.

The connection between the meeting and the upcoming exhibition was explained by the Museum’s deputy director, Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła, while the curators of the exhibition, Dr. Anna Czerner and Dr. Kamil Weber, brought to the attention of the audience, by means of a richly illustrated presentation, abound problems related to love relationships whose characters were prisoners-of-war.

The starting point of the lecture was quite unusual, as it focused on the cultural model of love, i.e. all the conditions shaping our ideas about this specifically human feeling. This was important for a fuller understanding of the situation in which the prisoners-of-war and their beloved found themselves - after all, for a long time they had been deprived of direct contact with each other, living out the socially implemented images of love - romantic, enduring, idealised. The main content of the presentation focused on these various scenarios.

The meeting was concluded with Christmas wishes on behalf of all the Museum workers and an announcement of next year's series. There were also sweet Christmas gifts for the guests.
