81st anniversary of the decision on the death of Poles from special camps

Today, on 5 March, happens the anniversary of an event which determined the fate of Polish prisoners-of-war in special camp of the NKVD (Kozelsk, Starobelsk, Ostashkov), and those who stayed in prisons in western Belarus and Ukraine.

The Politburo of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party (WKPb), headed by Joseph Stalin, made a decision on 14,7 thousand Polish prisoners-of-war, as well as 11 thousand other Polish citizens, to be shot without trial. The families of them (22 thousand people) were to be deported  deep into the USSR.

A consequence of this decision were the events known as the Katyn Massacre, which will be recalled in April, on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Katyn  Massacre.
