Museum items
A collection of museum items means primarily objects used or made by prisoners of war during the time of their captivity, as well as other mementos like items related to administration and guarding personnel in POW camps. Our collection contains nearly 30 thousand items, the basic part of which are monuments dating from the time of World War 2. The majority of them are connected with Polish soldiers subjected to the German POW system. Additionally, there is a number of mementos that come from camps of internment of soldiers of the Polish Army in Romania and Switzerland, and also items connected with the captivity in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Moreover, the collection includes museum items relating to POW camps based in Lamsdorf in the times of World War 1 or the Franco-Prussian War, as well as Labour Camp in Łambinowice (1945–1946). Therefore, the whole collection includes both historical and cultural objects: items of everyday use and personal belongings, uniforms and soldier’s outfit, camp equipment, artefacts like objects of artistic creation and handicraft, personal and official documentation, and also collections of photographs. Gathering, storing, conservation, elaboration and rendering the museum items accessible to the public are the responsibility of the Department of Collections and Conservation that is based in Łambinowice.
