The successive edition of the Polish-German project ”Work for peace” has come to an end

For nearly two weeks soldiers of the Polish Army and the Bundeswehr were working at the Site of National Remembrance, together tidying up the grounds of the former PoW camps. It was a next edition of the enterprise under the telling title “Work for peace”.

The main aim of the voluntary action was clearing the area of the former Stalag 318/VIII F (344) Lamsdorf, and also promoting civic education of professional soldiers – a specific group from the perspective  of both the history of this place and contemporary military crises that cast a new light on the question of maintaining peace in Europe. The event was organized by Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. and our Museum which had prepared a detailed plan of the volunteers’ stay as well as provided logistical support and coordinated the course of the work.

This year, the work began on 14 September. The German soldiers of the 931st Electronic Warfare Battalion of the Bundeswehr were joined by their counterparts serving in the 10th Opole Logistics Brigade of the Polish Army. The range of the work covered, among others, repairing the inner road, removing pieces of the damaged fence in the former camp sector, and also tidying up of the remnants of the camp infrastructure.

The crowning of the joint actions was the celebration organized on 24 September, during which the German soldiers laid flowers under the Monument of Martyrdom of Prisoners of War. There were also speeches made by Joachim Franke – representative of Volksbund in Poland, Lieutenant Colonel Marek Król – Chief of Staff of the 10th Opole Logistics Brigade, and Martin Sulzer – Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Opole. The celebrative appeal was attended by Jolanta Mierzyńska who represented the Head of Łambinowice Commune, Major Leszek Radzik of the 10th Logistics Brigade and us, museologists.
