The Romanian Heroes’ Day at Łambinowice Site of Remembrance

On the Romanian Heroes’ Day (Ziua Eroilor) out Site of Remembrance was visited by Major Sabin Georgescu – Deputy Attaché of Department of Defence, Army, Airforce and Navy at the Embassy of Romania in Poland. He represented also the Romanian diplomatic mission in the Baltic States.

The Romanian Heroes’ Day is a national holiday which is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, precisely 40 days following Easter, that is on Ascension Day. This year, it fell on 21 May. The holiday is deeply rooted in the tradition of Romania and commemoration of all soldiers and defenders of Romanian nation fallen throughout history – beginning with fights for independence in the years 1877–1878, through both world wars, into victims of the communist regime and those suffered in connection with contemporary military missions.

Although the central state celebrations and remembrance appeals are held in Romania itself, the memory of the fallen ones is cultivated also outside the country. A special point on the map of this memory is occupied by Łambinowice. It is here, precisely in the Old POW cemetery, where the remains of over 2.4 thousand Romanian POWs of World War 1 are buried. How important for both nations the care for the graves is manifest itself in the conservation works carried out upon the initiative of our Museum in 2020 by the Romanian Government in cooperation with the Commune of Łambinowice.

During this year’s visit paid by Maj Sabin Georgescu, tribute to his compatriots buried in Łambinowice was paid, including the laying of a wreath under the monument dedicated to victims of wars. While performing this symbolic act of remembrance, the Romanian delegation were accompanied by Dr Renata Kobylarz-Buła, Deputy Director of our Museum and a group of Museum workers.
