The Olsztyn edition of the work on the third season of the cycle “… but this is a different story”

There is intensive work going on in the Museum on the third season of the film cycle “…but this is a different story”. As part of the preparation for it, members of the Museum personnel and the photographer, Sławomir Mielnik, headed for Olsztyn in order to document the fates of two exceptional persons – Lt. Józef Tokarczyk and Lt. Witold Rytwiński.

Both officers were taken into German captivity during World War 2 and were transferred to Oflag II C Woldenberg, where, not ceasing to perform voluntary work and making use of their prewar experience as teachers, they actively endeavoured to improve the POWs’ living conditions. Although after the war they did not keep contact with each other, it was their children who did. In 2022, Krystyna Wyrzykowska and Lech Rytwiński decided to donate mementos connected with their fathers to our Museum.

The stay in Olsztyn delivered concrete results, among others in the form of valuable material documenting the prewar and postwar fates of both servicemen and their families. It also made it possible to get acquainted with the mementos kept by their descendants. As a result of the visit our collection grew richer with a particular item – a design of replica of Mauser rifle. Its first version made by Witold Rytwiński in the camp conditions, played a key role during a successful escape from the camp in 1942.

The effects of the visit for the film will be seen in the coming season of the series “…but this is a different story”. Waiting for its release, we recommend watching the previous episodes available on our YouTube channel.
