The jubilee of the 60th anniversary of establishing the Museum is drawing closer!

Between 3 and 4 December, our Museum is organizing an event and a scientific conference, which are meant to conclude the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the existence of our institution.

On the first day (3 December), the concert hall of Opole Philharmonic will be the venue of the main jubilee celebration, within the framework of which, among others, the debate under the title “Do we still need museums in sites of remembrance?” will be held. On the second day, in turn, we meet in Łambinowice to take part in the scientific conference entitled “An open account – World War II from the contemporary perspective”.

The speakers in the conference will be representatives of academic centres and institutions based in Poland (among others, Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the University of Łódź, SWPS University, Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum) and in Germany (Gedenkstätte Stalag 326 VI K Senne, Museum Berlin-Karlshorst). After their presentations, the floor will be taken by representatives of families of former POWs to recall the memory of their relatives’ histories. The formula of the appearances during the conference will vary, ranging from delivering individual papers, through two-voice debates, into moderated debate. During the break, we invite the participants to a curator-guided visit to the temporary exhibition under the title “...but this is just another story…”. The thematic spectrum of the conference appears very interesting, with issues such as: potential of collective memory and unceasing violence, responsibility of perpetrators of crimes on POWs, or societal atmosphere around war cemeteries, taking the lead.

The sessions on 4 December can be followed online: tutaj, beginning with 10 o’clock. We kindly invite everybody to log in!
