Our exhibition under the title “The end and the beginning. Warsaw Insurgents in German captivity” found its way into the City Museum of Dzierżoniów, where it will be presented in the picturesque scenery of the park-lapidarium there until 22 November this year. The exhibition brings closer the fates of nearly 17 thousand Warsaw Insurgents who – following the capitulation of the Warsaw Rising – were transferred to German POW camps. In the first weeks after the fall of the Rising, one third of them found themselves detained in Stalag 344 Lamsdorf (Łambinowice).

To Warsaw Insurgents the capitulation was not the end of their wartime vicissitudes: it became the beginning of their experience of captivity. Behind the camp wires the everyday reality was subject to uncertainty, longing for the nearest and the rigour of camp life. Among the POWs there were not only regular soldiers, but also women and children. Our display boards present photographs and documents, as well as histories of persons such as Dr Jadwiga Beaupré, Witold Pilecki or Stanisław Jankowski “Agaton”.

If you are in Dzierżoniów, we encourage everybody to visit the park-lapidarium and pause to get acquainted with their histories. They form a story of people whose wartime fates did not end together with the fall of the Warsaw Rising, yet opened the next phases of passing through German POW camps and finally regaining freedom.
