Report on the meeting with Daniel Podobiński

On Wednesday (13 October), as part of the cultural series of the "Łambinowice Museum Meetings" and the programme of the 18th edition of Days of German Culture in Opole Silesia, was held a presentation of the book Od powietrza, głodu, ognia i wojny. O krzyżach i kapliczkach gminy Łambinowice. [From plague, famine, fire and war. About crosses and wayside shrines of Łambinowice Commune]. The meeting with the author, Daniel Podobinski, an inhabitant of Wierzbie village, was attended by several dozen people who were clearly interested in the subject so closely related to local history and tradition.

During the introduction, Dr. Renata Kobylarz-Buła, deputy director of the Museum, noted that the maker of the cross at the exit from Bielic to Okopy, one of the 110 objects described  in the publication, was F. Stenzel (from Morów nearby Nysa), also known as the maker of the Monument to the French POWs from 1871 at the Old Cemetery of Prisoners-of-War in Łambinowice. The other crosses and wayside shrines were described by Daniel Podobiński, who invited the audience on a virtual tour through Łambinowice, Mańkowice, Piątkowice, Lasocice, Bielice, Malerzowice, Jasienica Dolna, Budzieszowice, Wierzbie, Sowin, and no longer existing Klucznik. In each of these villages there is (or used to be) an object to which a history is connected. In the course of the meeting, the author of the publication presented the most interesting of them. He also pointed out that the information was searched for in historical maps, public registers, local chronicles (e.g. those of Lasocice and Mańkowice), as well as in documentation of the Provincial Conservator of Monuments Protection.

The key issue of the closing discussions was saving local wayside shrines and crosses, which are, after all, "signs of the times" of great historical value. In the discussion participated Katarzyna Byra from the Łambinowice Commune Office, and Jadwiga Wójciak from the Bory Niemodlińskie Partnership.

All attendees of the event received a free copy of the book, which was published in 2020 by the Łambinowice Commune Office, thanks to funding from the European Union.
