Popularization of archaeological research
The front cover of the respected scientific periodical “Antiquity Journal” features a photograph taken by Daniel Frymark – a photographer who, from the very beginning of its establishing, has been cooperating with the team led by Dr. Dawid Kobiałka, responsible for carrying out archaeological research at the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice, initiated by our Museum
Photographic documentation makes a most essential part of every archaeological activity. Nowadays the thing does not only consist in precisely capturing details of excavations and artefacts found, but photographing itself has acquired the status of a research tool (especially in the ethnographic perspective), as well as that of an indispensable condition for an effective promotion of projects. The case of the archeological works conducted in Łambinowice proves this only too well – both Daniel Frymark and others (including Museum’s employees) spared no effort to record the progress of the works in the last year’s research in the Old POW Cemetery with great dedication and involvement.
What is interesting, the attention of the Editing Board of the Journal was drawn by just this photo which illustrates preparations of the pit for making photographic documentation. The picture itself is a part of a photoessay under the title “Lamsdorf/Łambinowice: an archaeology of memory” that brings the archaeologists’ activity in Łambinowice Site of Remembrance closer to the public, in particular the procedures of restoring interned Italian soldiers to societal memory. This was made possible owing to the interdisciplinary team of researchers, which included – beside archaeologists and historians – also forensic scientists and physical anthropologists.
