On anthropology and forensic medicine during “Łambinowice Museum Meeting”: an invitation
In what way do anthropologists and experts on forensic medicine help recreate the fates of persons whose remains are found in the course of archaeological research? This will be subject of the nearest “Łambinowice Museum Meeting” planned for 22 July.
Discovering a burial place is for an archaeologist a crowning of their field work. In turn, for an anthropologist and an expert on forensic medicine this means the opening of the process of analyzing the remains, which will allow determining the age, the sex, diseases or injuries suffered, and individual features of body build. It will also allow distinguishing changes which had occurred during the person’s life from those that were a result of processes going on after the death and burial. Thanks to cooperation between archaeology, physical anthropology, forensic anthropology, forensic medicine and history it becomes possible to learn in a fuller and detailed way the fates of people whose graves have remained unmarked for decades.
The starting point for the talks will be the research carried out for a few years now in the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice by our Museum, in this year co-participated also by the Association of Friends of the CMJW. The results have proved how much information can be extracted from seemingly mute testimonies of the past and how important cooperation of representatives of different disciplines is.
During the meeting the floor will be taken by Dr Dorota Lorkiewicz-Muszyńska – a forensic anthropologist, Dr Joanna Rogóż – a physical anthropologist, and MD PhD Julia Sobol – a specialist in forensic medicine. The meeting will offer an opportunity to present the results of the second stage of this year’s works carried out by the interdisciplinary team led by Dr Dawida Kobiałka within the project called “In search of the graves of Poles in the Site of National Remembrance in Łambinowice”, financed with the means from the budget of Opole Voivodeship.
