Commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Upper Silesian Tragedy

Commemorative ceremonies of the 80th anniversary of the Upper Silesian Tragedy will be held in Łambinowice on 26 January. They are organised by the Union of German Social-Cultural Societies and the Marshal's Office of the Opole Voivodeship. Our Museum is a partner.

The programme of the ceremonies, which will begin at 3 p.m., includes: a holy mass at St. Mary Magdalene’s Church in Łambinowice, laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the Cemetery of the Victims of the Labour Camp in Łambinowice and the screening of the film Czerwona zaraza [Red Plague] (directed by A. Fudala-Barańska) in the building of the CMJW at 4 Muzealna Street.

Let us remind you that the choice of the venue for the provincial anniversary commemorations is not accidental and is related to the functioning of a labour camp at Łambinowice in 1945-1946 for German civilians (or those recognised as such) awaiting their vetting and possible deportation to Germany. Contrary to its name, the camp did not have exclusively economic and confinement purposes. It also had a repressive character, as evidenced by the fact that around 1,500 inmates died of disease or tragically.
