Celebration of the 86th anniversary of the Katyń Massacre
On 13 April, Opole was a venue of celebrating the 86th Day of Remembrance of the Katyń Massacre Victims, which was attended by Dr Piotr Stanek, Head of the Scientific Department of our Museum. The celebration was organized under the honorary patronage of Monika Jurek, the Voivode of Opole.
The event, written in the calendar of local celebrations cultivating collective memory of the inhabitants of Opole Region, was opened with the Holy service held in Blessed Czeslaw Church, which offered a quiet moment of reflection over the fate of thousands of Poles murdered in the East. The next part of the celebration took place at the Monument of the Katyń Massacre Victims, situated in front of the church. Following the hoisting of the flag and joint singing of the national anthem, the gathered participated in the remembrance appeal. While the names of the victims were being read out, the histories of persons that for years were subject to eradication from the national awareness were recalled.
The participation of Dr Piotr Stanek in the celebration also offered an opportunity to underline the fact that our Museum actively takes part in the socio-educational campaign called “I remember. Katyń 1940”. The celebration ended with a symbolic laying of wreaths and a minute of silence, which were an expression of respect for the murdered Polish officers. The whole event was organized by the Association of Katyń Family in Opole and the 10th Opole Logistics Brigade.
