Acceptance of the effects of conservation works: a visit of Romanian delegation

In 2020, representatives of the Romanian Ministry of National Defense signed a contract with ZAJMART Mariusz Zając Studio of Works of Art Conservation. The subject matter of the contract was carrying out conservation works in the Old POW Cemetery in Łambinowice – renovation of a total of 2 388 graves of Romanian soldiers who had died in the Lamsdorf POW camp during World War I. This ambitious project was the effect of several-year-long efforts by our Museum to get the Romanian State to take interest in the necropolis of Łambinowice, which is the burial place of the largest number of Romanian soldiers in Europe outside the borders of their country.

The worth of the investment amounted to over EUR 145 thousand. Now, after the end of the five-year guarantee period, Romanians paid a visit to Łambinowice on 18 December to inspect the state of the completed works. The atmosphere of the visit was very positive – the Romanians voiced no objections regarding the condition of the graves after five years. The conservation works done by Mariusz Zając Studio that cooperates with our Museum on the regular basis and the Commune of Łambinowice has been acknowledged as a most effective enterprise. The Romanian delegation lay wreaths under the monument commemorating victims of World War I and lighted candles. They also went on a walk around the Łambinowice necropolis in the company of Museum workers: Dr Anna Wickiewicz, Elżbieta Góra and Piotr Jędorowicz as well as Mariusz Zając.

On Friday 19th December, the representatives of the Romanian state were invited to a meeting with Director of the Musuem Dr Violetta Rezler-Wasielewska and Dr Piotr Stanek, Head of the Scientific Department. The meeting was held at the seat of the Museum in Opole and concerned further cooperation as regards extending care over the Romanian graves, including both conservation works and educational activity.

We want to express our sincere appreciation for the responsible engagement of the Romanian State in the efforts to commemorate its fallen citizens. This is a most honorable approach, worthy of publicity!
